What is rugby?

Rugby, or formally rugby union, is 15 player team contact sport, which was founded in England early 19th century. Union is the most popular version of the sport. Additionally rugby league is played, mostly in England and Australia. Recent years have seen the rise of fast paced version of 15 men game rugby sevens, which, suprisingly, is played with 7 player teams. Forthcoming Summer Olympic Games will see the return of rugby in form of rugby sevens.

The aim of the game is very simple – use the ball to score more points than the other team. You can run with the ball, kick it and pass it, but passing forwards is not allowed. Rugby requires both physicality and smooth ball handling skills. This is the most addictive thing about rugby. It’s really easy to start but takes lifetime to master. As a full contact sport rugby includes tackling, rucking and many other forms of contact but it is regulated closely by rugby laws. More than anything else rugby is team sport for gentlemen and ladies, which has kept it’s core values almost 200 years. Rugby laws, referees and opponents are always respected by all the players. Disicpline, fair play and sportmanship generate unique athmosphere which distinguish rugby from other team sports.

Easy way to find more information about rugby is to log in to Rugby World’s beginners guide. There’s also handy youtube video to get to know the basics of the game.

Kuopio Rugby Club

Rugby is suitable for women too!

We, usually shortened to KRC, are rugby club founded 2011, which has teams for both genders. Women team plays only in sevens rugby at the moment and men play both original 15 men rugby union and rugby sevens. Long term strategy is to expand our club and to make rugby more well known in Kuopio and in the near by areas. Men’s team aims to win championship in near future and when there’s enough players to establish second team to develop new players.Women’s team, which is founded a year ago, plans to keep on growing the squad and to challenge older sevens team in Finnish championship. When there’s enough players, we are hoping to start to play 15’s rugby also. Junior activities at the moment are in early stages and it includes many cooperations with different schools. Club is close knit bunch and in addition to playing and training we arrange working parties as a part of fundraising and get-togethers just to have some fun.

To be part of this awesome club, you just have to participate to our beginner’s course or /and to contact us!
